What does the denture making process involve?

At your first appointment, we assess your needs and thoroughly examine your mouth to make sure you are suitable for dentures. We take digital scans or impressions of your mouth, which are used to create a model to ensure your dentures are a perfect fit. This is checked for fit, bite and comfort, and is adjusted until we are both happy with the look and feel.

Your dentures are manufactured to exact specifications by a dental technician in a dedicated laboratory. When they are ready, we see you in the practice for your fitting appointment. Complete dentures consist of a gum coloured arch with prosthetic teeth attached, and are fitted in the top or bottom of your mouth. Partial dentures are typically held in place with metal hooks attached to your existing teeth.

If you have a set of dentures you like, these can be digitally scanned and a copy set made. These can even be updated to the shape of your mouth if the old set has worked a bit loose.

It can take a little while to get used to your new dentures, so we give you some tailored tips and advice to help. We also see you for a follow-up appointment around a week after fitting to check your dentures and make any small adjustments required.

Types of dentures

Full dentures are used to replace an entire arch of teeth, and are usually made from durable acrylic material for a natural-looking result.

Partial dentures are used when you still have some natural teeth remaining to attach the replacement ones to. They can be made from acrylic, with a metal base, or using flexible Valplast material. There are many partial denture options, and we are happy to discuss these with you to ensure the best possible results.

Frequently asked questions

Dentures are designed to be hard-wearing, but they will last longer if you treat them with care. Dentures should be removed before you go to bed so your gums can have a rest, but they must be stored in water or denture fluid as they could lose their shape if allowed to dry out.
