Hygiene Treatment

Why are hygiene appointments important?

Your oral health depends on your gums. We are best placed to look after your gum health, preventing gum disease and removing any bacteria that is already irritating your gums. Gum disease, if left untreated, can cause gums to recede and can be a contributing factor to tooth loss. As gum disease also has links to health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, keeping your gums as healthy as possible will help your overall health as well.

The symptoms of gum disease are mild, so it is often overlooked. We carry out a check during the appointment to spot gum disease, putting us in a position to catch it before it can worsen.

Hygiene Treatment

What does dental hygiene treatment involve?

To begin your hygiene appointment, we ask you a little about your oral care routine at home and if you have any areas of concern. We also ask about your overall general health.

The main part of your hygiene appointment involves a scale and polish treatment using the NSK Combi Pro, an innovative unit that combines ultrasonic scaling and air polishing for gentle, comprehensive oral hygiene treatments. During the deep clean, we remove stubborn tartar from all the hard-to-reach areas of your mouth. We then professionally polish your teeth, leaving them feeling smoother, cleaner and brighter.

For more severe cases, we can also use laser therapy and clean away plaque from under your gum line. You may need to return for more frequent appointments to help control and manage periodontal disease.

To finish, we will give you some advice on how to look after your teeth and gums between appointments. We can also show you how to use interdental cleaning tools properly so you can keep up the hard work at home.

Frequently asked questions

Often the anticipation of going to the dentist or dental hygienist is much worse than the actual visit. We create a calm and relaxed environment, helping you feel at ease before and during your treatment. You may experience some discomfort, but we are guided by you and are happy to stop for short breaks if you need them.
